Favorite things

My list of tried-and-true things for running.

(If you’re a Polly Pocket like me, you’re in luck. The clothes on this list have been specially vetted for women under 5’3″ with a short torso and small build.)

ARM WARMERS
Oiselle Arm Warmers – fun colors, cool reflective graphic and thumbholes!

BRA
Moving Comfort Phoebe Bra – wicks like nothing else and dries in a cinch…and unfortunately no longer being offered by Moving Comfort/Brooks (boo).

BRA TANK
Lululemon Push Ur Limits Tank – moderate A-B support, modesty cups and feels like nothing on. Phased out by lululemon a while ago. Find one on eBay if you can.
Nike Dedication Airborne Long Sport Top, old version – hits just below the waist and has lightly padded cups, but also discontinued and hard to find

CAP
Adidas adiZero Cap, women’s version – lightweight stretchy fabric

ENERGY BARS
Kind bars – sinfully yummy

HAIR TIES
Goody Ouchless Hair Elastics – candy colors, no snag

HEADBAND
Sauce Ventilator Headband – keeps the noggen warm but not wet, and stays in place

JACKET
North Face Torpedo Jacket – windproof, water resistant, lightweight and good pockets

LONG SLEEVE TOP
lululemon swiftly tech long sleeve – lightweight wicking stretchy fabric in a form-fitting style with thumb holes
North Face Impulse 1/4 Zip – lightweight thermal wicking zip-neck with 2 pockets and thumb loops

LONG TIGHTS
Asics Thermopolis LT Tight – soft, has ankle zips

MAGIC IN A BOTTLE
Boiron Arnica Montana – pop 2-3 pills after a hard workout to minimize aches and pains

MAGIC IN A CREAM
T-Relief ointment – takes away soreness and tweaks of all kinds

PRE/POST-RUN CLOTHING
Lululemon Dance Sweat Pant or Lulu Pant – sweatpants that do not engulf your butt! These styles have of course been phased out but the Studio Pant III is a close match.
Lululemon Scuba Hoodie – generous hood and contoured fit, lasts forever
Oiselle Running Tee – a cozy post-run reward that shows off running pride with cool standout graphics; a 50/50 t-shirt that refuses to pill no matter how many times you machine wash and tumble dry it

RACE FUEL
Hammer Gel, vanilla flavor – does not give me stomach issues

RECOVERY DRINK
Harmless Harvest raw coconut water – a cut above all the rest because it truly tastes like it’s from a freshly cut coconut – amazing!
Nuun Active – favorite flavors = strawberry lemonade, lemon tea (reminds me of sweetened Lipton iced tea from the powder mix), tropical (tastes like Kool Aid)

SHOES
Nike Free Run, original version – man, I love these shoes, and in typical annoying Nike fashion they discontinued this model, and each Free Run iteration since has gone from bad to worse
New Balance Minimus Trail – great minimal trail runners but not for novice ankles

SHORTS
Lululemon Speed Short, 4-way stretch version – has flattering lines, amazing ease of movement and three pockets for storage; go for the 4-way fabric, the 2-way fabric is stiffer and performs differently
Oiselle Mac Roga Short – my other go-to shorts that transition nicely into around-town wear after a run; also made of a light ultra-comfy 4-way stretch fabric

SOCKS
Feetures Elite Ultra Light Low Cut socks — my go-to socks when temps are above 50 degrees; thin, snug, smooth and never bunchy, they allow for maximum ground sensation
Smartwool Women’s PhD Running Ultra Light Micro Socks – fun colors, naturally wicking, performs in all temps

SUN PROTECTION
Kinesys Fragrance Free Sunscreen SPF 30+ – an absolute winner that is lightweight, non-greasy, alcohol-free, fragrance-free, paraben-free and…drumroll, please…oxybenzone-free! And it doesn’t drip off when you sweat.

Burn Out Zinc Oxide Lip Balm, mango flavor – doesn’t turn your lips white!

TANK
Oiselle Fall Tank – fashion-forward, light and loose tank for hot humid climate when you want as little as possible touching your skin

VEST
Oiselle Gilman vest – new version here

WATER BOTTLE
Nalgene On The Fly bottle – it’s got a wide mouth plus a spout, a hard side, minimal weight, no taste interference; it’s also leakproof and dishwasher-ready… pure water-bottle genius!
